So what causes diaper rash?
- Moisture in the diaper from urine
- Bacteria in the diaper from feces
- Reaction to chemicals in baby wipes
- Diapers that are too tight and do not allow your baby’s skin to “breathe”
- If you use cloth diapers, your baby’s skin may be irritated by the laundry detergent you use to wash his/her diapers.
- Antibiotics – whether you are taking them while breastfeeding your baby or if your baby is on antibiotics.

So what are the best ways to prevent or treat diaper rash?
- The key to preventing diaper rash is to keep your baby’s diaper area clean, cool and dry.
- Change your baby’s a diaper as often as possible
- Let your baby go without a diaper for some time each day
- Apply breast milk to the diaper area once a rash has developed.
- Switch to cloth diapers if you are using the disposable kind
- Switch to warm water with a very mild soap to clean the baby’s diaper area if you suspect that the rash is a result of a reaction to the baby wipes.
- Avoid scented baby wipes or those that contain alcohol
- Don’t use plastic pants over your baby’s diaper as this traps moisture.
- Use creams with zinc oxide in them.
- Vaseline could also be used to protect your baby’s diaper area from moisture.
- Pat your baby dry rather than rubbing the towel in this area.
- Many parents use powder in their baby’s diaper area but this is not recommended as powder can get into your baby’s lungs and cause other problems.
- If after trying some of the above remedies and a few days have passed and you do not see any improvement, I highly suggest that you check with your doctor as perhaps there is something else causing this problem.
